Course Outline
Effective crisis response and management remain as the fundamentals in managing air disasters or significant disruptive events in the New Normal. This introductory course will provide you with the knowledge to distinguish events that require crisis management plans vis-à-vis those requiring business continuity plans, manage the initial responses to an aircraft disaster, understand the considerations to care for affected persons and understand how news spread following an event. This course is designed in accordance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices [Doc 9859, 9973, 9998 and EUR Doc 031], incorporating the ICAO Council Aviation Recovery Taskforce (CART) guidance on COVID-19 and is delivered via eLearning.

What You Will Learn
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the magnitude of aviation events and the impact on all affected persons and the travel industry
- Understand the immediate response to an aircraft disaster by the various agencies
- Visualise the facilities that are mobilised at the airport to attend to the affected passengers and crew
- Understand the emotional and mental resilience required when supporting the needs of affected passengers, crew and their family members; and the assistance that airlines and airport operators are expected to provide
- Relate the impact of implementing the ICAO CART guidance on the above
- Recognise the factors that could intensify or limit the spread of news of any event

This course is beneficial to any personnel from civil aviation administrations, airport operators, airlines, aircraft manufacturers and personnel with responsibilities in crisis management and business continuity planning in the aviation sector, particularly personnel who are new to crisis management, involved in supporting or implementing crisis management or interested to find out more about crisis management roles in the aviation business.

Key Instructor(s)
Mr Lawrence Chng is the former Principal Specialist Emergency Preparedness of Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at the Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA). He started his career as a Flight Engineer with Singapore Airlines (SIA) more than 40 years ago. During his last 15 years with the airline, he assumed the critical role of Crisis Manager for the SIA Group and had responded to the crashes of SilkAir MI 185 and SIA SQ006 and several mass disruptions to flights. During his stint in CAAS, he had responded to the closure of a terminal, an aircraft crash during Airshow, drone intrusion at the airport and had managed Border Health Control in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Mr Chng has served as the Chairman of the Star Alliance and Association of Asia Pacific Airlines Emergency Response Working Groups. He had trained hundreds of key appointment holders and care givers in both the SIA Group and CAAS, and is currently conducting a number of crisis management programmes at SAA.
